McKinney and Company provided planning, full-service design, and construction services for Sun Chemical, a manufacturer of inks used in the printing industry. The project represents a consolidation of two smaller facilities that were located in the City of Richmond and Ashland, Virginia.
Sun Chemical is the foremost manufacturer of inks and coatings for all graphic arts applications and is a recognized market leader in their industry. They operate more than 300 facilities worldwide and employ more than 14,000. Sun Chemical is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dainippon Ink and Chemicals Inc. of Tokyo, Japan.
McKinney and Company provided senior review for the Phase I ESA and the geotechnical analysis for foundations, earthwork, and pavements. In addition, Sun Chemical utilized services in land planning, civil engineering, architecture, structural engineering, electrical / mechanical engineering, project management, and construction administration.
The McKinney process engineering team assisted Sun Chemical with recommendations and schematic diagrams for the various chemical and mixture processes and the process controls, stations, scales, mixers, alcohol and acetate piping and nitrocellulose storage containment associated with them. McKinney also designed a specialized fire alarm system to operate in a hazardous environment. In addition, McKinney provided geotechnical engineering and con-struction phase testing.
