Tangier Combined School
Tangier Island, Virginia

McKinney & Company provided full scope of design services and construction management for the structural raising required to correct overwhelming design flaws by others of a 25,000 SF school facility constructed in 1999 on Tangier Island, Virginia. The only school on the island, the structure was wood framed and supported on wood pilings. As the Construction Manager for the Accomack School Board, McKinney performed design services, procured competitive bidding for subcontractors’ scopes, and issued contracts between the Owner and sub-contractors. McKinney provided a full-time superintendent to manage and coordinate the construction site, as well as project management throughout the design, bidding and construction phases.

The remote location of the project (12 miles across open water from Reedville by ferry) coupled with an extremely aggressive schedule made for logistical challenges that the design and construction team worked together to overcome. All material had to be barged to the island, off-loaded, and transported to the school site. The project was started and completed while the students were out for summer vacation. Students returned to school on time with all structural, electrical and mechanical services complete and functioning.
